Yesterday I heard the ‘text’ ring from my phone. I didn’t expect this ‘Sign of Love’!  My hands were covered in rich black soil that I had been joyfully playing in all day digging and planting, loving every minute. Something prompted me to gingerly touch the glass on my phone with the damp dirt clung to my fingers and slide the bar over so I could see who had a message for me.

It was from my ‘high-tech’ 85 year old mom.  She had taken a picture with her iphone of the apple pie she had just made for my 88 year old dad.

After nearly 60years of being married to my equally beautiful dad, birthing 7 kids, pouring her heart into raising 6 of us (one child was stillborn) and teaching us what she knew of how to be in the world, being both a mom and dad’s apartment manager, sewing our clothes, baking 8 loaves of bread a week, traversing the ups and unexpected downs in their lives, the list goes on…..she is still making dad apple pies with a heart in the center.

Their love has grown strong and deep.
We didn’t know if dad was going to make it last year, he had some tough things happen to his physical health that took a toll on him emotionally and mentally too – but now he’s back on his tractor farming his ground and sometimes will work 10 hour days.

My mom loves him with a love that’s pure and free. Instead of worrying something might go wrong – she wants to see him loving life and doing what he loves, and so she stays home and bakes apple pies with a heart in the center.

I’m so lucky to have my parents who exemplify devotion to each other and the cherished part of Love. Those that know them get to witness Signs of Love every day –  and sometimes even receive an apple pie with a heart in the center!
